Design and plant plants for aquarium

Stone, wood and roots are important design elements of the pool and provide residents with refuge. It is important to use only specially treated decorative materials from expert agents so as not to cause water imbalance. By the way, aquatic plants are not only used for decoration, they are also important for oxygen production, a refuge and a breeding ground. An expert in a pet store explains which plants are located, which lighting and what they need to take care of.

Basically, the trees grow lower to the front, the taller plants are located in the rear area. Inspired by Internet designs from fascinating artists, for example from world champion Oliver Knott. Gravel with a particle size of two to three millimeters, sand or soil suitable for the bottom of a freshwater aquarium. It should lie on a fertilizer or nutrient mixture.

Value of water in the aquarium

Once the technology was installed, the pool was set up and planted trees, so-called runtime began. It takes a few weeks to get accurate water values in the aquarium/fish tank. These include nitrogen concentration, total hardness (GH), carbonate hardness (KH), pH value, carbon dioxide concentration (CO2) and oxygen content (O2). The so-called bacterial filter, settles the filter and converts pollutants into phytonutrients, which must first be formed. Learn about the ideal values for the respective residents. Fish, snails, etc., can only move in if they are permanent - usually after about two weeks. Then check the values once a week. There are special measuring devices and test strips for this.

Note: For example, if the pH value is too low, the water is too acidic and dangerous for the fish - the water needs to be changed immediately.

Fish and other animals

Choose fishes for different swimming areas (top, middle, bottom). Make sure they work well together and have the same requirements for water and light.
For starters, experts often recommend neon tetra, guppies, molly or catfish. These species are easy to take care of and live in sandbanks or small groups. Shrimp and freshwater snails look attractive and contribute to biological balance by eating algae.

The following applies to animal numbers: no more than one centimeter of fish per two liters of water. About 20 percent of the soil, vegetation and technology volume must be deducted from the pool volume.

When buying, make sure the animals look healthy and exhibit normal swimming behavior. For home shipping, pet store suppliers pack fish in special bags with rounded corners. These prevent compression and injury. A special polystyrene transport box optimally protects them from fluctuations in temperature and light. At home, first put the bag in the aquarium to adjust the temperature. Only then can fish enter the tank.

Fish's food

Add dry or frozen food to the aquarium as directed. Food should disappear after a few minutes, otherwise the amount is too great. But even if the fish eats everything, regular feeding is not necessarily good - some species do not know that they are full. You can also feed raw food and some food from our kitchen. Clarify exactly what and how much is suitable for aquarium residents.

Note: Remove food residues, bacterial sources and spots from water immediately. They pollute the water.

Take care of the aquarium

To keep the biological balance in the pool intact and people comfortable, you have to do regular checks and small tasks.

daily

Feed the animals and check if they are fine
Check the tree for disease
Check technology and temperature

weekly

First clean the plates: Clean the plates with an algae magnet or aquarium sponge. Algae on the rear window may remain - they serve as a food source for algae-eating residents.
Plant care: remove dead and diseased plants, as well as heavy algae leaves. Cut off the rampant buds.
Then conduct a partial water change: replace one-third of the aquarium water with clean, hot water.

monthly

Clean the filter
Clean the floor with a stool bell
At larger intervals
Clean the pump head and supply hose (about every three months)
Fluorescent tube replacement (about twelve to 18 months, LEDs even less often)
Refresh substrate fertilization (about every two years)
Tip: Avoid any unnecessary interference in the aquarium. It can affect the biological balance and disturb fish.

vacation instead

You plan your next vacation as early as three months after the fish is brought in. The best solution is a reliable person undertakes all the tasks. If necessary, healthy, fully developed fish can survive for up to a week without feeding. A feed dispenser is also an option for this short period.

Agents specialized for fish and aquariums

How do we identify a reputable, competent specialist agent for seafood? The Central Association of Zoological Retailers recommends special attention to the following criteria:

Employees take the time to provide detailed, qualified advice taking into account the customer's living situation.
A good specialist pet store with an emphasis on the right accessories and materials. ZZF warns against accessories against animal welfare, such as wall mounted aquariums.
A good pet dealer recommends not buying pets. Instead, he provides professional materials so that customers can calmly inform themselves about future pet needs.
Suppliers that advertise pets as a special offer should avoid animal lovers.
In a good pet store, staff will continue to give pet owners expert advice after purchasing.
